  • Marlins' Heriberto Hernandez: In camp with new club

Hernandez signed a minor-league deal with the Marlins in November.

Hernandez is starting in left field and batting ninth in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He was once a top prospect with the Rays but he slid down the defensive spectrum and hit .187 in 44 games at Triple-A last year.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Effective in first spring start

Alcantara allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.

The right-hander touched 99 mph and threw 13 of 17 pitches for strikes in his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October of 2023. Alcantara has already been announced as Miami's Opening Day starter for the March 27 game against the Pirates. Craig Mish of the Miami Herald doesn't expect the 29-year-old to have any pitching restrictions this season despite it being his first year back from the procedure.

  • Marlins' Valente Bellozo: Begins hunt for rotation spot

Bellozo struck out two in a perfect inning during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.

The right-hander got the start in the Marlins' spring opener and tossed 10 of 16 pitches for strikes. Bellozo was a surprising contributor in 2024, posting a 3.67 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB over 13 starts in his big-league debut, but the 25-year-old isn't guaranteed a rotation spot this time around with Sandy Alcantara healthy and Cal Quantrill now in the fold. Bellozo is expected to compete in camp with top prospect Max Meyer and Adam Mazur for the fifth starter spot on the Opening Day roster.

  • Marlins' Victor Mesa: Facing multi-week absence

Mesa was diagnosed with a mild right hamstring strain Sunday and is expected to be sidelined 3-to-4 weeks, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The 23-year-old reported tightness in the hamstring Saturday and will now be unavailable for at least the next few weeks. Mesa's injury will make it difficult for him to earn a spot on Miami's Opening Day roster, which is especially notable since he's out of minor-league options.

  • Marlins' Jesus Sanchez: Could be limited to DH early

Sanchez, who is dealing with elbow inflammation, might be used as the Marlins' regular DH to begin the season, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The elbow issue isn't expected to force Sanchez to the injured list for Opening Day, but Miami might limit how much time the 27-year-old sees in the outfield until he's 100 percent healthy. Sanchez saw a career-high 537 plate appearances in 2024, turning that workload into 18 homers, 16 steals, 64 RBI and 60 runs along with a .252/.313/.417 slash line, and he's being counted on to fill a key spot in the Marlins' batting order.

  • Marlins' Connor Norby: Aiming for 30-homer campaign

Norby believes his can hit 30 homers this season, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

The 24-year-old spent the offseason refining his swing mechanics to keep his bat in the zone longer, and Norby is confident his natural loud contact will produce plenty of power without him needing to sell out and swing for the fences. "I'm here to prove that I want to be one of the best players in the league, and I think I can do that," Norby said this week. "That's what it's about -- and helping the team win games." Thirty homers may not be an unreasonable goal for Norby, even if loanDepot Park tends to suppress right-handed power. Over 139 games last season split between Triple-A and the majors in the O's and Marlins organizations, he went yard 26 times.

  • Marlins' Victor Mesa: Dealing with hamstring tightness

Mesa reported tightness in his right hamstring Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The severity of Mesa's injury is currently unknown, but the Marlins will give him a couple of days to rest before re-evaluating him. The 23-year-old outfielder reached Triple-A for the first time last season, slashing .259/.319/.430 with 13 home runs, 51 RBI and five stolen bases across 355 plate appearances at that level, but he has an outside chance to break camp with the big-league squad.

  • Marlins' Eury Perez: Goes on 60-day IL

The Marlins placed Perez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.

The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Seth Martinez, who has been claimed off waivers. Perez has been throwing off a mound and doing well as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery, but he is not expected to join the Marlins' rotation until around midseason.

  • Marlins' Seth Martinez: Claimed by Fish

The Marlins claimed Martinez off waivers from Arizona on Thursday.

The 30-year-old righty was pushed off the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster Monday to make room for Kendall Graveman (shoulder). Martinez spent all of last season with the Astros, turning in a 3.59 ERA and 1.27 WHIP alongside a 36:18 K:BB over 52.2 regular-season innings. Assuming he keeps a similar level of production during spring training, he'll have a good chance of winning a spot in Miami's Opening Day bullpen. Eury Perez (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Marlins' Woo-suk Go: Suffers fractured finger

Go was diagnosed with a fractured right index finger Thursday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

He will be re-evaluated in a couple weeks. Go spent all of the 2024 season in the minors, holding a 6.54 ERA and 52:22 K:BB over 52.1 innings and the Double- and Triple-A levels. He was removed from the Marlins' 40-man roster last June.

  • Marlins' Jesus Sanchez: Will get some reps in center field

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Tuesday that Sanchez (elbow) will play some center field during spring training, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports.

Sanchez didn't play center field at all in 2024, but he started six games there in 2023 and 74 games at the position in 2022. The 27-year-old is still likely to see most of his action in right field in 2025, but it's possible he's used in center field on occasion. Derek Hill and Dane Myers are expected to see most of the reps in center field for the Marlins. Sanchez is currently overcoming right elbow inflammation but is expected to be cleared for full activities soon.

  • Marlins' Jakob Marsee: Nursing oblique strain

Marsee is recovering from a low-level right oblique strain, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Marsee is going through his rehab progression but it's not clear when he might be ready to participate in Grapefruit League games. The 23-year-old was acquired from the Padres last May in the Luis Arraez trade and is projected to begin the 2025 season at Triple-A Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Jesus Sanchez: Recovering from elbow inflammation

Sanchez is recovering from right elbow inflammation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Sanchez's hitting has continue uninterrupted and he is in the final stages of a throwing program, so it sounds like this is just a minor speed bump. The 27-year-old is projected to open the 2025 campaign as the Marlins' primary right fielder and should bat in the middle of the lineup.

  • Marlins' Max Meyer: Working on expanding arsenal

Meyer worked with new Marlins pitching coach Daniel Moskos this offseason on grips for a sinker and a sweeper, as well as on refining his changeup, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

"My slider is going to be more down in depth and my sweeper's going to come across the plate," Meyer said Friday before displaying his new arsenal in a live batting practice session. "I feel like with the movement, there's definitely a big separation between those two... My change is going to be a really good pitch, too, one of my best pitches. I feel like all my pitches are one of my best pitches right now. I just have crazy confidence in them that I haven't had a lot in the past going through the injury." Meyer has relied mainly on two pitches, his mid-90s fastball and nasty slider, dating back to his college days, and if even one of his other offerings can become a quality pitch, it would significantly improve his chances of not just sticking in the rotation but reaching his sky-high ceiling as a starter.

  • Marlins' Xzavion Curry: Remains in organization

Curry cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.

The right-hander was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Tuesday but will stick in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Curry will remain in big-league camp as a non-roster invitee but is likely to open the campaign at the Triple-A level.

  • Marlins' Max Meyer: Throws live batting practice

Meyer (shoulder) threw live batting practice Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Meyer's 2024 season ended in early September due to right shoulder bursitis, but it appears he is entering camp this spring without any restrictions. The young right-hander, who was the third overall pick in the 2020 Draft, could have a leg up for one of the spots in the Marlins' rotation given the significant upside he offers. Meyer posted a 5.68 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB through 57 big-league innings in 2024, but he has a career 151:45 K:BB over 126 Triple-A innings.

  • Marlins' Dax Fulton: Faces hitters Thursday

Fulton (elbow) threw live batting practice to a number of hitters Thursday, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports.

The extent of Fulton's throwing session isn't fully known, but the fact that he was facing hitters in the early stages of camp is a sign that he's healthy again after he missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from his second career Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in the summer of 2023. Despite the major red flags on his health record, the Marlins still protected Fulton from the Rule 5 Draft this winter and added him to their 40-man roster. The 23-year-old lefty isn't expected to be a factor in the majors anytime soon, as he'll need to prove his health and turn in quality results in the upper levels of the minors before he makes his big-league debut.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Confirmed as Opening Day starter

Alcantara will be the Marlins' Opening Day starter on March 27 versus the Pirates, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

He'll likely be opposed by Paul Skenes, although the Pirates have not officially announced their Opening Day starter yet. The Marlins are sure to limit Alcantara's workload to some degree in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, but he's more than 16 months removed from the operation and was the only real option to take the ball Opening Day.
